Chances are, if you go outside today and look up at the sky, across a field, or along rooftops, you will see a starling. They are everywhere. Starlings are medium-size birds, with iridescent black feathers often speckled with white. Rather quirky and jaunty, these birds usually are seen in flocks poking about looking for anything to eat.
But one starling in particular is very different.
This would be Moby — the most amazing white starling.
One in a million
Moby was rescued as a fledgling in the spring of 2024 in upstate New York. His rescuers, Tony and Kathy, immediately fell in love with the little bird and welcomed it into their home. They realized that because Moby is an albino animal, he had virtually no chance of survival in the wild.
Survival challenge
Albinism
Albino starlings face significant survival challenges due to their lack of melanin. The absence of pigmentation makes them highly visible to predators, eliminating the natural camouflage that typical starlings rely on.
Vision Impairment
Melanin is essential for proper eye development, and its absence often results in poor eyesight, light sensitivity, and reduced depth perception.
Social Integration
Albino starlings may also struggle with social integration within their species. Their starkly different appearance can lead to rejection or even aggression from other starlings.

What can we learn from Moby?
It is our hope that Moby’s story reaches far and wide, for it is more than just a tale of a common starling. Moby is a white-winged messenger offering countless opportunities to inform us not just about why he is so unique, but also about songbirds in general and their place in our world.
